Last Saturday afternoon, the Trinity Women’s Basketball team added another loss to their current record of 10-9 overall, 0-8 in the NESCAC, at the hands of the Bates Bobcats.
Before the game, the Bantams honored their four senior captains: Mackenzie Griffin ’16, Alexa Menard ’16, Melanie Mills ’16, and Christina Raiti ’16. For their Senior Day game, the women certainly went out with a bang.
The Bantams fought hard in the beginning, holding Bates’ lead to just four points by the end of the 1st quarter. However, the Bobcats extended their lead to 28-40 in the 2nd quarter, thanks to a plethora of shooting fouls committed by Trinity. Questionable calls plagued Trinity throughout the game, but they managed to finish the 3rd quarter down only seven points. The Bantams were looking up in the 3rd quarter thanks to Griffin, who scored 15 points in the game. First-year forward Erin Cunningham ’19 also got to strut her stuff, scoring 13 points and grabbing four rebounds.
The Bantams stayed aggressive throughout the 4th quarter. At one point, the Bantams were down by only three points. But in the end, Bates’ Nina Davenport and Chelsa Nason took the lead back from the Bantams and ended the game 61-77.
Other notable players include Melanie Mills, who lead Trinity with 15 points, seven rebounds, and three assists. Fellow Bantam Sheena Landy ’17 put up 11 points, along with four rebounds, four steals and a game high six assists. The Bantams made more field goals at 40.3% (27-67), but this was not enough; Trinity only hit 1-13 three-pointers compared to Bates’ 10 out of 25, and Trinity had more fouls.
Though this loss in combination with the latter half of the season was tough, Griffin still reflected positively on her time as a Bantam, “I love seeing my best friends every day [and] honestly, I wouldn’t change a thing.” The Bantams will play their final home game of the season against Smith.
